Auto Zone has a “Etched wheel cleaner that works awesome too. just be sure to wash the residue off really well and a little polish will help to, it wont stick as much for the next time you clean it. One product is called neva-dull, and another called mothers. It’s a long strip of cotton soaked in some chemical. You just tear a lil piece off and rub it on there. It will turn completely black. Then you take a clean dry rag and wipe the black right off to reveal that new shine.

Some people swear by Simple Green and a brush for the tire, Simple green and a soft cloth for the chrome. Undiluted dish washing liquid works great for the tough stuff. Windex for quick clean up. Make sure the bike is cool and remember to get everything rinsed off well especially the back tire. A little wax now helps get the junk off the next time.

The latter, used Harley parts dealers, can actually be a bit more expensive to shop with, as they know their parts are in demand. Because they know this they command a higher price for the parts they have, especially if they are stock parts for older Harley-Davidson’s.  Sometimes though you can find Harley Motorcycle parts for sale on eBay and get a decent deal from someone who is parting out an old hog.

Going over to an uncles house and seeing the garage filled with custom motorcycle parts. Most of the motorcycles weren’t actual custom Harley-Davidson bikes. Some were Indians, and there was one that was always being worked on. I watched custom Indian motorcycle come together from ground up, and while that was impressive, I was waiting to build a Custom Harley-Davidson.  It wasn’t too long before that happened.

My Uncle actually got an order for a custom Harley-Davidson from a neighborhood of his. Though there were more highly ranked custom motorcycle builders out there, there was no-one else who would do as good of a job for such an affordable price. He didn’t build custom motorcycles for a living, it was his hobby and a labor of love for him, and he would always do a solid job. That’s how he got the custom Harley-Davidson order in the first place. Some kid had been given his dad’s old bike, and wanted to fix it up. Not having the skills himself, he asked my uncle to help him out. I spent the whole summer helping build that bike. This lead to the 1950’s being a difficult time for Harley-Davidson because many consumers were tired of waiting and started buying other motorcycles from other manufacturers. Harley-Davidson was back on top by 1957 with the introduction of the Harley-Davidson Sportster.

Minor changes to the style and design of the motorcycles took place through the early 1980’s, but Harley-Davidson decided some major changes were needed. Introducing a model with a five speed transmission called the FLT,  and replacing the drive train with a drive belt and in 1984 the twin engine Harley-Davidson was introduced.
